Asantehene is custodian, not owner of golden stool and Asante Kingdom – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has disclosed that the sacred Golden Stool is not the private property of the Asantehene.

According to him, the Asantehene is not the owner of the Asante Kingdom but rather its custodian.

He made this known while delivering a royal lecture at Howard University in Washington DC, in the United States of America, on Tuesday.

Otumfuo explained that every occupant of the Golden Stool receives an inheritance that existed before him and must endure after him.

“Every Asantehene holds authority temporarily, but holds the people’s heritage in trust”.

“The land, institutions, memories, and moral obligations associated with the Stool cannot legitimately be reduced to the personal interest of the individual who occupies it,” he stated.

He emphasized that from this perspective, leadership is a form of trusteeship, adding that the idea contains important lessons for all systems of governance.

The renowned monarch called on leaders in power to ensure their decisions pave a positive way for generations yet unborn.
