Hundreds rendered homeless as fire ravages Asawase Pelele slum

Hundreds of slum dwellers at Asawase Pelele in the Asokore Mampong Municipality have been rendered homeless after fire destroyed several makeshift homes.

The fire broke out early Thursday, August 27, and swept through the densely populated settlement, destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze at about 7:13 a.m., preventing further spread to nearby structures.

According to the Fire Service, congestion in the area made access difficult for fire tenders, which affected efforts to bring the fire under control quickly.

No casualties have been reported yet, but affected residents have been left counting their losses as most of their belongings were consumed by the fire.

Meanwhile, investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
