Mahama sets up Committee to prepare AU strategy ahead of Chairmanship
President John Dramani Mahama has constituted a high-level committee of experts to develop a strategy and implementation document to guide Ghana’s priorities when he assumes the chairmanship of the African Union in January 2027.Ghana Regional News
The committee, chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is expected to develop proposals for President Mahama’s consideration as he prepares to lead the continental body.
The committee includes former and current diplomats, academics, public officials and experts with experience in African affairs.
Members include former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas; former African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson, Ambassador Kwasi Quartey; and diplomats Ambassadors Chris Kpodo, Amma A. Twum-Amoah, William Awinador-Kanyirige, Khadija Iddrisu and Francis D. Kotia.
Other members are Dr Delese Mimi Darko, Mr Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Dr Edem Adzogenu, Dr Obodai Torto and Mr Clarence Amoatey.
The committee is expected to help shape an agenda aimed at ensuring an impactful and transformative tenure for President Mahama from the start of his AU chairmanship.
The initiative is intended to prepare the President to respond to the expectations of the continent’s estimated 1.5 billion people and establish clear priorities for Ghana’s leadership of the African Union.
The committee has been commended for its commitment and work as it develops the strategy ahead of the January 2027 transition.
