Catholic Bishops: Parliament recall over drug trafficking ‘legitimate and necessary’
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has backed efforts by Members of Parliament to recall Parliament from recess to scrutinise the country’s response to narcotics trafficking.
The Minority has petitioned the Speaker to recall Parliament to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shipment of 3.9 tonnes of cocaine linked to Ghana, arguing that the matter requires urgent parliamentary oversight because of its national security implications.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 21, the Bishops say the parliamentary oversight is “legitimate and necessary” and should proceed without delay.
According to the Bishops, the Ministers for the Interior, Transport and National Security, together with NACOC, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service and the National Intelligence Bureau, must account for the effectiveness of measures at Ghana’s entry points.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has directed security agencies to produce a blueprint aimed at improving inter-agency collaboration and strengthening Ghana’s response to drug trafficking and related security threats.
