Fuel hikes, insurance, spare parts forcing 30% transport fare increase – Commercial Transport Chairman

The National Chairman of Commercial Transport Operators, Asonaba Nana Yaw Wiredu, says hikes in fuel prices, vehicular insurance, Road Worthy Certificate and Assembly stickers are major contributing factors to their decision to increase transport fares.

According to him, the cost of spare parts and other inputs has also necessitated the hikes.

His comments come after transport operators announced a 30 percent increase in transport fares.

Speaking to Dr. Cash on the Dwabrem Show on Tuesday, Asonaba said the increment in fares has now become necessary to sustain their business.

“Fuel prices keep going up every two weeks, insurance has been increased, Road Worthy and Assembly stickers have all gone up. How do you expect us to survive if we don’t increase fares?” he said.

“Even spare parts, the prices have doubled. We buy engine oil, tyres and other inputs at high cost”.

“The 30 percent increment is to help us stay in business and continue serving Ghanaians,” he added.
