MTTD reveals over 900 killed in 9,000 preventable accidents in eight months

Over 900 people have lost their lives in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2026, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) describing a significant number of the incidents as preventable.

During the eight-month period, about 9,000 preventable crashes involving approximately 15,000 vehicles were recorded, leaving nearly 11,000 people with injuries of varying degrees.

“Between January and August, we can report that we have recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving about 15,000 vehicles of all categories and models, with about 11,000 Ghanaians having sustained various degrees of injury as a result of these preventable crashes,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV.ACP Obeng said reducing the carnage would require a combination of preventive and responsive measures.

He said sustained road safety education must be complemented by interventions designed to minimise the consequences of crashes when they occur.
