COCOBOD Establishes Stabilization Fund To Cushion Cocoa Farmers Against Global Price Drops- Sam Jerome

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has established a stabilization fund to cushion cocoa farmers whenever prices of the commodity fall on the international market.
According to COCOBOD, the fund is backed by the newly signed Ghana Cocoa Board Bill, 2026, which seeks to protect farmers and sustain the cocoa industry.
The Head of Public Affairs for COCOBOD, Sam Jerome, says the fund will allow government to maintain prices for farmers in the event of a downturn on the international market.
Speaking to Dr. Cash on Kumasi-based OTEC FM’s afternoon political show, Dwabrem, on Monday, Mr. Sam Jerome disclosed that lessons learned from previous years informed the decision to set up the fund.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring price stability and protecting the livelihoods of cocoa farmers who have in the past suffered from volatile world market prices.
The Ghana Cocoa Board Bill, 2026, was passed by Parliament on 31st July, 2026 and assented to on 28th August, 2026. It consolidates and updates decades-old cocoa legislation into a single, comprehensive legal framework.
Under the new law, all cocoa farms are now designated as protected lands, with conversion without government approval banned, while illegal conversion of cocoa farms or illegal mining (galamsey) on cocoa lands can attract 10 to 20 years imprisonment and heavy fines.
