The Head of the Oncology Unit at the Tafo Government Hospital, Mrs. Angela Acquah, has warned women against the common practice of keeping mobile phones and money inside their brassieres, saying it poses serious health risks.
The warning comes as the world marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, a period during which health professionals intensify education on the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
Speaking in an interview with OTEC News reporters Emmanuel Kamasah and Sandra Yeboah , Mrs. Acquah explained that keeping mobile phones close to the breast for long periods exposes breast tissues to radiation, which can have long-term effects on the cells.
She added that keeping dirty notes and coins in the brassiere can also cause infections and may contribute to breast complications, as the breast area is very sensitive.
According to her, while there is no direct evidence linking the practice to breast cancer, it remains unhealthy and women should desist from it.
Mrs. Acquah therefore advised women to adopt safer ways of keeping their valuables and to prioritize regular breast self-examinations and medical check-ups.
