Maame Timah sanctioned for wrongful invocation Otumfuo’s Great Oath against Aduaben queen mother

A woman identified as Maame Timah has been found guilty of wrongly invoking the Great Oath of the Asantehene, known as Ntamkese, against the queen mother of Aduaben, Nana Ama Kyifa II.

The ruling was made at a sitting of the Adonten Division Council of the Kumasi Traditional Council, Wednesday, September 29, 2026, where Maame Timah was ordered to slaughter two sheep and pay an additional GH¢2,000.

The items and the money will be sent to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the custodian of the Great Oath.

Maame Timah had invoked the sacred oath against Nana Ama Kyifa II, claiming that she did not qualify to occupy the Aduaben Queen Mother stool.

She argued that Nana Ama Kyifa II’s blood lineage was connected to Poano and, therefore, questioned her eligibility to serve as Queen Mother of Aduaben.

However, during proceedings before the Adonten Division Council, Maame Timah confessed that her decision to invoke the oath was influenced by her uncle, who is also the head of their family.

She told the council that her uncle instructed her to invoke the Great Oath against Nana Ama Kyifa II. The family head subsequently admitted before the council that he had indeed ordered his niece to carry out the action.

The head of the Adonten Division, Nana Adu Gyamfi, explained that under Asante’s customs and traditions, the Great Oath of the Asantehene cannot be “sent” through another person.

He stated that if the family head had a genuine matter requiring the invocation of the sacred oath, he should have personally invoked it instead of instructing his niece to do so.

Following the admission, the family head accepted responsibility for his actions and pleaded with the council for mercy.

The council subsequently directed Maame Timah to perform the required customary rites, including the slaughtering of two sheep and the payment of GH¢2,000 to be sent to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Nana Ama Kyifa II, who also serves as the Otumfuo Adontenhemaa, was enstooled as the rightful heir to the Aduaben stool by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on August 14, 2023.

She succeeded her grandmother Nana Afia Sarpong, who passed away in 2001.Source:
