Chiefs must protect lands from galamsey for generations unborn, National House of Chiefs President urges

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has called on chiefs to protect their lands from illegal miners.
According to him, chiefs have the mandate to protect lands vested in them for generations unborn.
He noted that lands are not merely economic assets to be exploited for immediate gain, adding that they are the inheritance from ancestors.
He noted that the responsibility of chiefs in protecting the environment carries profound significance in the discharge of their duty.
He made these remarks at the National Conference for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives on illegal small-scale mining.
The conference, held in Kumasi on Monday November 2, 2026, is a gathering aimed at discussing ways to fight illegal mining in Ghana.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, at the event said illegal mining remains a major national concern.
He urged all stakeholders to work together, as the effects of illegal mining affect all irrespective of your location.
He emphasized that the fight against illegal mining should not be left only at the national level, as it requires a coordinated national effort to achieve results.
He described the conference as apt, adding that it will afford the platform for stakeholders to brainstorm and proffer pragmatic solutions to the illegal mining menace.
