Identifiable Market Groups at the Kumasi Central Market have urged the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reward the loyalty of Ashanti region to the party with a female running mate slot for the 2024 general elections.
They believed that the Ashanti region deserves to be honored for the unflinching support, loyalty, and dedication it has shown towards the party since time immemorial, which has contributed the greatest number of votes to the party’s victory in general elections.
The groups observed that a female choice from the region to partner Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be the “best motivating factor” the NPP can use to entice women and their families to vote in large numbers for the party to “break the 8”
The groups’ appeal to the NPP leadership follows the insistence of some women market groups from the Ashanti and Ahafo regions selecting a female running mate from the Ashanti region.
At a press briefing at the Kumasi Kejetia Market on Friday, April 12, 2024, the group also appealed to Former President John Agyekum Kufuor to advocate for the running mate slot in the Ashanti region.
The groups that are known supporters of the NPP said “choosing a woman as the running mate will attract more women to come on board to campaign not only in Ashanti but in other regions.”
“Women represent the higher percentage of the country’s population, and being born as influencers, they stand in a better position in convincing people to vote massively for the NPP,” they stated.
“Ashanti region has been most loyal to the NPP for the past years, given it most votes in winning general elections, as our reward, we want a female running mate from the region in the 2024 elections,” they added.
“Anytime the people in the Ashanti region wholeheartedly vote in general elections, the NPP wins, and vice versa, hence the need to listen to the voices of the people and serve them with the selecting of a female running mate from the region,” they concluded.
