KATH Engages Retired Mortuary Attendants amidst MOWAG Strike
The Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region has taken drastic measures to mitigate the impact of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) strike, which began on Thursday.
The strike, triggered by poor conditions of service, has prompted the hospital to hire retired mortuary attendants to fill the gap.
, Head of Human Resources Unit Francis Agyarko in an interview with OTEC News Reporter, Elizabeth Gyamfua Fosu , said this move ensures the facility’s smooth operation. “We urge clients with loved ones at the mortuary to visit for negotiations,” he stated.
“Our mortuary will remain open despite the strike action.”
The MOWAG strike affects all government health facilities nationwide, with workers demanding improved salaries and working conditions.
Mortuary Workers say they lack basic tools, such as hand gloves and boots, exposing them to health hazards .
KATH’s management has put in place special arrangements for bereaved families to collect bodies due for removal.
In-patients who pass away during the strike will also receive proper preservation and storage.
The hospital’s measures aim to minimize disruptions, but the strike’s outcome remains uncertain.
