Photos: Floods paralyze Kumasi’s Airport Roundabout after heavy downpour, thousands of commuters stranded

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded at Airport Roundabout in Kumasi’s Ashanti Region following a heavy downpour that caused flooding in the area.

The about  30-minute rain overwhelmed local rivers, forcing them to overflow.

OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng, reporting live from the scene, described the chaos: “Hundreds of cars and commuters, unable to cross the swollen Pelele river, are parked along the road, awaiting the waters to recede.”

The flooding resulted in gridlocks on major routes leading to the Airport roundabout. Drivers from Sofoline, Kenyasi, Tech, and Asawase were forced to take alternative routes.

Residents interviewed by OTEC News blamed the perennial flooding on inadequate drainage systems and poor waste management.

They urged authorities to address the issue promptly to prevent future disasters.

“We’ve been experiencing this flooding for years. It’s time for the authorities to find a lasting solution,” said one resident.

Another resident added, “The small drains can’t handle the rainwater. We need better infrastructure to prevent these floods.”

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has been urged to take immediate action to mitigate the flooding and ensure commuters’ safety.
