Support EC’s efforts to declare outstanding results – Afenyo-Markin to CSOs, media
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has appealed to the international community, civil society organizations (CSOs), the media, and advocates of democracy to support the Electoral Commission (EC) in finalizing and declaring results for outstanding constituencies.
His call comes amid ongoing disputes over the re-collation of parliamentary results in certain areas.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Monday, Afenyo-Markin underscored the need to uphold democratic principles and criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their reluctance to accept defeat in some constituencies.
He contrasted the NDC’s stance with that of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who conceded defeat ahead of the EC’s official announcement.
“Clearly these are not Democrats. Whereas Br Bawumia conceded defeat even before EC’s official announcement, they were not ready to accept defeat in these constituencies. They were not ready to concede defeat where they knew clearly because the posture was that they won’t allow the process to continue,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He appealed to all relevant stakeholders to show interest in the outstanding constituencies and provide the EC with the moral support needed to proceed with the declarations.
“Our appeal to international communities, civil society organisations, the media and all lovers of democracy is to show interest in these outstanding constituencies and give the EC every moral support to proceed to make these declarations,” he added.
