AngloGold Ashanti confirms incident at Obuasi Mine as Mahama orders investigation
AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has confirmed a violent incident on its Obuasi concession, where seven illegal miners lost their lives, and several others, including a member of the security forces, sustained injuries.
The company stated that on the evening of January 18, a large group of armed illegal miners attempted to forcibly enter the fenced operational area in the northern section of the concession.
Authorities, per the statement, were mobilised to prevent the intrusion, leading to the tragic confrontation.
The mine’s management has assured the public that the situation is now calm and that they are collaborating closely with authorities to address the aftermath of the incident.

The violent clash has heightened tensions in Obuasi, prompting local authorities to shut down schools in the area temporarily.
The move aims to ensure the safety of students and staff while preventing potential unrest from spilling into educational facilities.
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the incident and ordered an immediate investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The President has directed the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Interior to collaborate with AngloGold Ashanti and local authorities to deliver a comprehensive report.
In a statement, President Mahama stressed the need for accountability and urged calm among residents of Obuasi.
“The safety and well-being of all citizens must remain our priority. Those responsible for this tragic loss of life will be held accountable,” he stated.
