Ashanti Region: Drivers block Ejisu-Onwe road over stalled construction works

Some drivers belonging to the Ejisu Transport Union on Monday (7 July), mounted a blockade along the Ejisu-Onwe-Kuntanase stretch, paralysing vehicular movement and causing disruptions to business and transport activities in the area.

Chanting slogans the demonstrators called on the government to resume and complete the long-stalled road project. The protest was led by leaders of the transport union, who described the action as a “desperate cry for attention.”

The road is a lifeline for several communities, including Onwe, Essienimpong, and Krapa. Residents say the stalled project has made access to schools, markets, and hospitals increasingly difficult, especially for those living in more remote parts of the constituency.

“We are spending all our daily sales on spare parts and repairs. This is no longer sustainable,” one of the protesters told Asaase News.

“We are sick and tired of this empty promises. This road has received little attention ever since the contractor abandoned the site. No-one has made any effort to fix it. Pregnant women are suffering, and we cannot continue to endure this”, another said.

The Ejisu-Onwe road has been left in a deplorable state for years. Although the government began rehabilitation works on the road in 2024 as part of a broader infrastructure improvement plan in the Ejisu Municipality, construction has since come to a standstill — with contractors abandoning the site for over a year.

Police were later called in to disperse the crowd. Mr Kwaku Akyempim Chairman of the Ejisu transport Union said a petition has been sent to the President through the local assembly for urgent intervention.

Efforts by Asaase News to reach the contractors responsible for the project were unsuccessful. The Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu, Madam Jerryne Asante was also not reachable.
