“A loyal patriot”: Bawumia, NPP lead tributes to late Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi

Tributes have been pouring in following the sudden death of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, describing the loss as a profound shock to the party and the nation.

In a statement released by the Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the NPP, the party said it was deeply saddened by the news, which has cast a dark cloud over the Akwatia Constituency and beyond.

“This heartbreaking news has come as a great shock to the Party, the people of Akwatia, and the nation at large,” the statement read.

Unwavering commitment

Hon. Kumi, affectionately referred to by supporters as Akwatia Star Boy, was praised for his unwavering commitment to the development of his constituency and loyalty to the party’s ideals.

The cause of death has not been officially disclosed, but tributes have begun pouring in from political figures, constituents, and party supporters who say he served with passion and humility.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his immediate family, the chiefs and people of the Akwatia Constituency, and the entire NPP fraternity across the country,” said Evans Osei Yeboah Tsooboi, Eastern Regional Communications Officer of the NPP.

In a social media post former vice president Mahamudu Bawumia joined the NPP to mourn the death of Kumi who he described as “loyal patriot”.

“My condolences to the immediate family,” he wrote.

In parliament the House adjourned sittings following the sad development. In a solemn address, the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin described the late lawmaker as a dedicated legislator who served his constituents and the House with passion, charisma, and a strong sense of duty.

He, therefore prayed the House to suspend all business for the day – a prayer the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga seconded.

“And I would say that God knows best…This brother had all that anybody would want to have in a brother. He was always there everyday happy. This House is away that today we programmed a couple of businesses. It is the prayer of this side of the House with the indulgence of the leader of the House that proceedings be terminated”.
