Court denies bail for Wontumi TV Presenter

The Accra Circuit Court has refused bail for Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, who was arrested after making on-air comments linking President John Mahama to the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
Kofi Asare was picked up by police on Tuesday, August 12, following the broadcast, which authorities say contained unsubstantiated allegations related to the August 6 crash.
The fatal incident, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, has since sparked national mourning, and a state funeral is scheduled for Friday, August 15.
During Thursday’s court proceedings, the judge declined the defence team’s bail application, ordering that the accused be remanded into police custody pending further investigation.
Speaking to Newsmen after the ruling, counsel for the accused, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, criticised the court’s decision, describing it as a miscarriage of justice.
Mr. Afoakwah further indicated that the legal team would challenge the ruling at the High Court.
