2026 Budget: NDC Inherited an Economy “in Distress and Burdened by Debt,” But Has Turned It Around — Ato Forson

Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government inherited an economy “in distress, weighed down by debt, weakened by mismanagement, and stripped of confidence.”

Presenting the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament, Dr. Forson said despite the difficult conditions they met, the government has made remarkable progress in restoring economic stability and confidence.

“Our first budget in 2025 was an act of courage — a declaration that Ghana will rise again through reform, discipline, and visionary leadership,” he noted.

He revealed that the 2026 Budget, themed “Resetting for Growth, Jobs and Economic Transformation,” is a continuation of the government’s commitment to rebuild the economy on a foundation of fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth.

According to him, the government has chosen “the harder but higher road of reform, renewal, and resilience,” which has led to the restoration of fiscal discipline, control of inflation, stabilization of the cedi, and renewed investor confidence.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the focus going forward is to consolidate these gains and accelerate job creation and inclusive economic transformation.
