Ashanti Region: Set aside a day for Kente Wearing like you did for Fugu, Kente Weavers plead gov’t

Kente weavers in the Ashanti Region are calling on the government to dedicate a day for Kente wearing, just as it did for Fugu.

The weavers support the government’s move to declare every Wednesday as Fugu Wearing Day, but believe the same energy should be applied to promote Kente fabrics.

Speaking to OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng,on Wednesday, the weavers appealed to the government to design pragmatic ways to support their trade.

“In as much as we support this Fugu move, we are calling on government to support Kente too,” one weaver said.

“The Kente industry is equally big and employs hundreds of people, so supporting the industry will create more employment for the youth.”

The weavers noted that the Kente Industry in Bonwire, Adanwomase, Ntonso, and other areas in the country has enormous financial potential to support both local and national economy.

They hope the government will consider their plea and take steps to promote the Kente industry.
