Wassa Kyeikrom: Miner allegedly mutilates own manhood, injures landlord over hardships

A 26-year-old miner, identified as Peter Okyere, is alleged to have mutilated himself by cutting off his penis and testicles after reportedly attacking his landlord at Wassa Kyeikrom in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region over hardships.
The incident occurred on Thursday, May 7, 2026, throwing the mining community into shock.
Peter Okyere, who hails from Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region, had reportedly relocated to Kyeikrom about two months ago to engage in mining activities. He is currently receiving treatment at the Green Shield Hospital at Sefwi Bekwai with support from the Wassa Dominase Police Command.
Speaking to the media, the landlord of the victim, Yaw Anaafi, said the young miner had lived peacefully with his colleagues since arriving in the area and had never exhibited violent behaviour or signs of drug abuse.
“He had been staying with his friends quietly and had never shown any signs of aggression or involvement in hard drugs,” Anaafi stated.
According to him, the incident took a strange turn when Peter Okyere suddenly stormed his room wielding a metal object while asking unusual questions about how to make money.
“He entered my room holding a metal object and started asking me how he could become rich. He kept saying life had become difficult for him after the death of his father,” the landlord recounted.
Anaafi said he was rescued after a neighbour rushed in to assist him during the confrontation.
“A neighbour quickly came to help me, and that gave me the chance to escape from him,” he explained.
The landlord further disclosed that after the incident, Peter Okyere allegedly returned to his room where he mutilated himself by cutting off his genitals.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Peter Okyere denied being under the influence of alcohol, tramadol, marijuana, or any hard substance at the time of the incident.
“I was not drunk and I had not taken tramadol, weed, or any hard drug,” he said.
According to him, he suddenly felt compelled to seek help from his landlord on ways to make money, but the situation later escalated into the unfortunate incident.
The victim appealed to the public for support as he battles severe pain and emotional trauma following the incident.
“I am in serious pain and emotional distress. I am appealing to the public to help me,” he pleaded.
Police are yet to officially comment on the matter, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
