Asanteman SHS student, 17, electrocuted using phone in rainstorm

Tragedy has struck Meduma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region after a 17-year-old final-year student of Asanteman Senior High School was electrocuted while using his mobile phone during a rainstorm.

The deceased has been identified as Harrison.

Eyewitnesses in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Monday May 11,2026, say Harrison had returned home from school and placed his phone on charge.

He was reportedly making a call with the device still connected to power when lightning struck.

 The surge is believed to have passed through the phone, electrocuting him instantly.

The impact left severe burns around his neck and ears.

His body has since been deposited at the morgue pending further investigations.

Confirming the incident, the Assemblyman for the Meduma Electoral Area, Hon. Boateng, described the incident as tragic and cautioned residents against using electronic devices during heavy rains.

“It is very unfortunate. I urge all residents, especially young people, to avoid using phones that are connected to power when it is raining. Let us take precautions to prevent such painful losses,” Hon. Boatenf  told OTEC News.

Police have commenced investigations into the incident.
