Drivers call for fuel tax cuts and lower spare parts duties ahead of 2026 Mid-Year Budget review
Commercial drivers across the country are calling on government to reduce taxes on fuel and cut import charges on spare parts ahead of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.
They say the current high cost of operation is making transport business unsustainable.
Speaking to OTEC news Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Wednesday ahead of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, the drivers noted that frequent increases in fuel prices, coupled with high duties on vehicle parts, have forced many of them to raise fares.
According to them, this has put more pressure on commuters who are already struggling with the cost of living.
Speaking ahead of the budget presentation by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, some drivers said a reduction in fuel levies and import taxes would help stabilize transport fares and improve their income.
“Fuel is too expensive and spare parts are also costly because of the taxes. If government can reduce these charges, we won’t have to keep increasing fares every week. It will help both drivers and passengers,” one driver stated.
The drivers are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed in Thursday’s Mid-Year Budget Review.
They believe that targeted tax relief on fuel and vehicle parts will ease the burden on the transport sector and bring some relief to the general public.
