3 killed, 15 injured as violence erupts in New Winneba

Three people have been confirmed dead and about 15 others injured following violent clashes in New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The Ghana Police Service said those injured, including a police officer, have been taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.

According to the Police, about 300 people armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba Township at about 10:40 a.m.

The group allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties belonging to residents of the community.

Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the violence and restore calm.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also deployed additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to reinforce security operations in the area.

The Police Service said the situation is currently under control and security personnel remain deployed to prevent further disturbances.

It added that further details would be communicated as investigations continue.
