Ashanti Region: Passengers decry overcharging by drivers despite 8% fare hike
Some passengers in parts of the Ashanti Region have called out transport operators for charging more than the approved increment in transport fares.
According to them, some drivers are charging more than the agreed eight percent increase by stakeholders.
Transport operators after several meetings with the Ministry of Transport agreed on an eight percent increment in fares.
The increment, which took effect on Saturday, September 26, 2026, has begun generating rifts between drivers and passengers.
Checks by OTEC News Desk has revealed that some drivers are taking beyond the agreed amount, with commuters from Nkawie to Abuakwa saying transport fare has been increased from 4 cedis 50 pesewas to 6 cedis, which is more than the eight percent increment.
Meanwhile, some drivers on the Suame road have equally increased fares beyond the approved rate, with passengers calling on authorities to intervene.
“From Nkawie to Abuakwa, they used to take 4 cedis 50 pesewas, now they are charging 6 cedis. This is more than the eight percent they announced” one of the passengers recounted.
“The drivers are cheating us. Government said eight percent but they are charging their own prices”.
