Ashanti NPP condemns    detention of Lawyer Baffour Awuah, cautions Mahama over EOCO’s excesses

Ashanti Regional NPP has asked President Mahama to be cautious about the manner investigative bodies are being used to harass opposition elements including NPP members  .

It said the detention of Lawyer Baffour Awuah overnight was needless and an affront to the rule of law.

In a statement released by the Regional Secretary, Dr Francis Adomako, the party asked civil society organizations, the Ghana Bar Association and other stakeholders in Ghana’s democracy to take interest in the path President Mahama and his assigns were charting and call them to order.

We publish in full the statement as released by the Regional Secretary to the media.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE ASHANTI REGIONAL NPP ON THE DETENTION OF HON. LAWYER BAFFOUR AWUAH, MP FOR MANHYIA SOUTH, BY EOCO

2nd October 2026

The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted with grave concern the manner in which the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is handling the case involving the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Lawyer Baffour Awuah.

This includes his overnight detention in EOCO custody and the imposition of a excessive GH¢50 million bail condition.

We find this treatment not only reprehensible, but an affront to the rule of law—especially given that the MP has not been found guilty of any of the charges leveled against him by EOCO.

The Ashanti Regional NPP wishes to place on record that while we fully recognize EOCO’s mandate to investigate matters concerning national security and the general conduct of public and private citizens, such investigations must strictly adhere to constitutional limits and the principles of natural justice.

It is deeply troubling that after voluntarily presenting himself upon learning from the Deputy Attorney General that an arrest warrant had been issued, Hon. Baffour Awuah was subjected to treatment designed to humiliate him and demean the high office he holds.

While his legal team works tirelessly to satisfy the onerous bail conditions and secure his release today, we serve notice to President John Dramani Mahama that the path his appointees in state agencies are charting is dangerous for our democracy.

We remind the President that political power is transient. Using state power to intimidate political opponents threatens national cohesion and sets a dangerous precedent that will inevitably backfire.

We call on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Clergy, and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to condemn this blatant abuse of power before it escalates political tensions in the country.

Thank you.

Signed,

Francis Adomako

Ashanti Regional Secretary, NPP
