Afigya Sekyere East: NPP executives apologise to Agonamanhene, seek to lift ban on MP’s tournament

The Constituency Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Afigya Sekyere East have rendered an unreserved apology to the Agonamanhene, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, and the Agona Traditional Council, over a clerical error in an invitation letter issued by the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Mavis Nkansah-Boadu.
The apology follows a ban imposed on the MP by the Traditional Council.
In a statement dated 23 October, signed by the Constituency Chairman on behalf of the executives, the party said it had taken notice of a letter issued by the Agona Traditional Council to the MP concerning the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament scheduled for 23 October.
“First, we wish to sincerely apologize to Agonamanhene, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, for the clerical error in the invitation, in which Agonamanhene was addressed as ‘Chief’ instead of ‘Paramount Chief,’” the statement said.
“We deeply regret this inadvertent error and assure Agonamanhene and the Agona Traditional Council that it was entirely unintentional, was not borne out of disrespect, and will not happen again. As a party, we take responsibility for this error and offer our unreserved apology.”
The apology comes on the back of a strongly-worded letter from the Agona Traditional Council dated 21 October, titled DISRESPECTFUL CONDUCT, in which the Agonamanhene accused the MP of disrespect.
In that letter, the chief said the MP’s invitation letter of 8 October, addressed him as “The Chief, Agona Traditional Council,” which he described as “a huge surprise and an insult of the highest order.”
The Agonamanhene recounted that he swore before Agona Amantuonson on 4 June, swore before the Otumfuo on 29 June at Asanteman sitting, sat in state on 2 and 3 July, offered “Aseda” to the Otumfuo on 27 July, and celebrated his maiden and Big Akwasidae on 19 July and 30 August 2026, respectively, with the Sekyere South Municipal Police Commander, GES Director and MCE Hon. Evans Twumasi and other dignitaries in attendance.
“You, the Hon. Mavis Nkansah Boadu is yet to show respect and reverence to me as the Omanhene of Agona Traditional Council Area, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II (and by extension the Otumfuo II Asantehene) during your periodic visits to Agona Township,” the chief wrote.
Consequently, he banned the MP “with immediate effect from holding any social event (particularly the Tournament in question scheduled for 23rd October, 2026) within my Traditional jurisdiction, i.e Agona, Bipoa, Wiamoase, Bedomase, Afamanaso, Akrofonso and Amponyinamoa.”
Responding to the concerns, the NPP executives vouched for the MP’s character.
“We can confidently vouch for her character, integrity, respect for humanity, and deep regard for tradition and customary authority. Her reverence for traditional institutions is a value she holds very dear,” the statement said.
The executives clarified the circumstances of the MP’s absence at the enstoolment, stating she was duly represented by party executives, her family members, the former District Chief Executive, and the Presiding Member of the Sekyere South Municipal Assembly.
“Drinks, water, schnapps, and other items were also presented at the enstoolment as gestures of goodwill and respect. Her absence in person should therefore not be interpreted as a deliberate disregard for Agonamanhene or the Agona Traditional Stool,” it said.
They added that after the enstoolment, Hon. Nkansah-Boadu had made two separate attempts to visit the Agonamanhene to pay her respects, but both were unsuccessful.
The party also defended the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament as a laudable youth development initiative into which the MP has invested substantial financial resources to provide recreational activities and showcase talents to scouts.
“We hold Agonamanhene and all traditional leaders within the constituency in the highest esteem and recognize the vital role they play in preserving our cultural heritage, promoting peace, and advancing community development,” the executives said.
The Constituency Executives reaffirmed their confidence in Hon. Nkansah-Boadu and their commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with the Agona Traditional Council in the interest of peace, unity and development.
