Lecturer urges government to create special security unit for SHSs under 24-hour economy programme

A lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr Collins Kankam Kwarteng, has urged the government to create a proper security unit for Senior High Schools under the 24-hour Economy initiative.

He believes the current security arrangements at SHSs in the country, with some schools housing over 3000 students, is dangerous.

According to him, each school must have dozens of security personnel who will run on at least two shifts a day to ensure the school is always with proper security systems.

“These security officers must be trained, given a special uniform and stationed in schools for 24hr protection,” Dr Kwarteng said.

Dr Kwarteng said this on the Kumasi-based OTEC FM on Wednesday.

He called for the total abolition of what he called the “watchman” system of security, adding that the current system is very vulnerable.

He argued that relying on a single watchman leaves schools exposed, especially at night and during weekends.

He is calling on the government to act now to make schools safer under the proposed 24-hour economy initiative.
