Free SHS food suppliers threaten five-day protest over 2024 arrears

The Controlled Food Suppliers Association (CFSA) has announced plans to stage a five-day peaceful demonstration at the premises of the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) in Accra over what it describes as prolonged delays in the payment of debts owed to its members for food items supplied under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme in 2024.
The demonstration, scheduled to take place from Monday, November 16, to Friday, November 20, 2026, is intended to compel the Ghana Commodity Exchange to settle outstanding payments owed to members of the association.
In a formal notice addressed to the management of GCX, the association said its members had made repeated efforts to secure payment for the food supplies but had yet to receive the monies owed them.
The association expressed frustration over what it described as the failure of the relevant authorities to respond adequately to its demands, despite several follow-ups and a formal notice previously served on the Ghana Commodity Exchange.
According to the notice, the association issued a two-week ultimatum to GCX on October 7, 2026, demanding payment of the outstanding debts. The deadline expired on October 21, but the association says the matter remains unresolved.
It said the decision to embark on the demonstration followed the apparent failure of the Ghana Commodity Exchange to act on the earlier notice, leaving its members with little option but to resort to public protest to demand payment.
The notice, signed by the association’s Administrative Secretary, Cornelius Korku Logo, said the leadership had consistently acted in good faith in pursuing the monies owed to its members.
“The leadership of the Association has at all times acted in utmost good faith in demanding monies legitimately owed to its members. However, the prolonged delay in the payments in spite of the persistent follow-ups, and the apparent decision by GCX to disregard the Association’s two weeks’ notice given on 7th October 2026, which lapsed on 21st October 2026, has compelled the Association to take this rather difficult but reasonably necessary option to demand the settlement of monies owed to its members.”
