Lawyer William Kusi, lead counsel for Akosua Serwaa in Daddy Lumba case, dies

Lawyer William Kusi, lead counsel for Akosua Serwaa in the Daddy Lumba case at the Kumasi High Court, has died.
His death was confirmed by the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, in a Facebook post on Saturday.
Lawyer Kusi, 56, was widely known in political circles as a staunch supporter of Kennedy Agyapong.
He was a visible figure in the Ashanti Region during the NPP’s internal campaigns and was often seen defending the former Assin Central MP on various platforms.
He rose to national prominence as lead counsel for Akosua Serwaa in the high-profile legal battle over the estate and widowhood rights of the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu.
Mr Kusi, of Dominion Chambers, filed the suit at the Kumasi High Court on behalf of Akosua Serwaa, seeking a declaration that she was the only surviving lawful spouse of the late musician.
He argued that her marriage to Daddy Lumba, contracted under German law on December 23, 2004, was monogamous and remained valid until his death on 26 July, 2025.
The case pitted Akosua Serwaa against Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, and the head of the Fosu family, Kofi Owusu Fosu, over who was entitled to perform widowhood rites and control funeral arrangements.
In November 2025, the Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, ruled that both Akosua Serwaa and Odo Broni were valid spouses of the late musician.
