The Member of Parliament for Asawase constituency in the Ashanti region, Hon Mohamed Mubarack Muntaka has described the British Prime Minister Theresa May as ‘’mentally deranged’’ over her comments made concerning the legalisation of homosexuality in Ghana.
Hon Muntaka who is also the Minority Chief Whip says the suggestion by Theresa May that her government is willing to support a change in the legislation that makes homosexuality illegal in Ghana and other Commonwealth nations is absurd.
His comments are in reaction to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech recently in which she said the UK regretted its part in the making of anti-gay laws and that her country was ready to help any Commonwealth member who wants to decriminalize same-sex relations to do so.
According to the PM, the UK government says it is thus ready to help such countries rewrite their laws to accommodate gays.
She said the UK’s role seems to have resulted in a “legacy of discrimination, violence and even death,” in some of its former colonies.
Most former colonies of Britain frown against homosexuality and have as part of measures to curtail it, introduced criminal laws against it.
Theresa May, while addressing the gathering in the UK, said, “I’m all too aware that these laws were often put in place by my own country. They were wrong then, and they are wrong now.”
She praised member countries which had recently decriminalized homosexuality.
She added that “Yet there remains much to do…Nobody should face discrimination and persecution because of who they are or who they love. The UK stands ready to support any Commonwealth nation wanting to reform outdated legislation that makes such discrimination possible,” she said.
Speaking to Accra based OKAY fm Hon Muntaka said this idea of pushing us aggressively into accepting a particular norm and practice that is alien to us and abominable to us is totally offensive and insulting and manipulative.
“For me, that is an insult to Ghanaians. Insult to the extent that they [are] trying to dictate to us [Ghanaians], “Theresa May is mad, she mad” he fumed.
“It is against the belief of Christians, Muslims, and Traditionalists,” he adds.
