Mamponteng: Our Lady of Grace SHS organizes Cultural Day Celebration

Students of Our Lady of Grace Senior High School at Mamponteng in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region have organized a Cultural Day Celebration in the school.

Tutors and students of the school were spotted dressing beautifully in different traditional outfits to depict the rich African Culture.

The event which was marked on Wednesday May 17, 2023, was part of activities to mark the school’s 10th anniversary.

The students had the opportunity to represent their various tribes through, dancing, traditional dressing, art, treasure hunting among other activities.

Speaking to OTEC News Jacob Agyenim Boateng, the Chaplain of the school, Father Benjamin Atobra explained that the essence of the cultural day was to remind the students and Ghanaians and the world that Africa, particularly Ghanaians have rich cultural and traditional heritage, saying that it was necessary for children to have a deep knowledge of their culture and tradition.

Throwing more light on the Cultural Day, Father Atobra explained that “We want to celebrate the diversity in our culture and beyond because we have students from other African countries who are willing to share and learn from their Ghanaian students”.

“Today we want the world to know that Ghana is blessed with rich cultural and traditional heritage. We want our children to know that no matter where they come from, everyone of them comes from a place called home. We want to also let them know that everyone of them comes from a rich cultural background”. He said.

“And at this early stage of childhood, it becomes imperative for parents and teachers to drum it into their consciousness on the need for them to know the culture and language of their birth” .

 Some of the students who spoke to OTEC News at the sidelines of the event expressed joy over and commended their tutors for the event.

They disclosed that, the cultural day has afforded them the opportunity to experience other cultures, something they described as worthy of doing.

They called on the school’s authority to occasionally organize such events to further broaden their horizon in the cultural space.

For his part, the Municipal Education Director at Kwabre East, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, commended headmaster and teachers of the school.

The said the move was laudable and called on other schools to learn from Our Lady of Grace SHS.

CULTURE FESTIVAL

Nana Adu Asare who doubles as the chief Of Amakom said the Education Directorate has rolled out measures to improve children’s understanding in culture.

He added that, 24TH June, 2022 has been adopted to be a day set for cultural day in the municipality.

He said the directorate plans to organize traditional games, food bursar, dressing etc at the basic schools. This festival aims at instilling in our young ones our cultural heritage, the sense of belongingness and cultural tolerance.
