UTAG calls off strike indefinite

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its eight-week old strike which brought academic activities to a standstill in public universities across the country.

The decision comes after an emergency meeting by the National Executive Committee on Tuesday to consider the outcome of the referenda on its decision to temporarily suspend the industrial action commenced on 10 January 2022.

In a statement on Tuesday (8 March), UTAG commended its members for their cooperation during the strike.

“The National Executive Committee of UTAG held an Emergency Meeting on Tuesday, 8th March 2022, to
among others, consider the outcome of the referenda on its decision to temporarily suspend the industrial
action commenced on 10th January 2022. You may recall that the NEC of UTAG voted to temporarily suspend
the strike action on Monday, 21st February 2022 to pave way for negotiations with the Employer to help meet
some of the demands and address the concerns of UTAG,” it said.

“The NEC of UTAG is resolved to pursue the agreements for the employer to implement the Market Premium
and/or review the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023, to help address concerns of poor Conditions of
Services of the University Teacher in full.

“After careful assessment of the referenda results, interim agreements reached between UTAG and the
Employer, and the various branch reports, the NEC of UTAG resolved to indefinitely suspend the strike
action of 10th January 2022,” the UTAG statement added.
