Ghana Card: Use voter IDs – Christian Council to NIA

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has urged the National Identification Authority (NIA) to accept voter IDs as one of the base documents needed for registration for the National Identification Card.

General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose said measures must be instituted to ensure that “whoever holds a government of Ghana card or ECOWAS passport actually is a national of Ghana or ECOWAS in the same way whoever holds a national ID card should be a citizen of Ghana”.

He told Moro Awudu on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show that: “There are issues with the voter ID cards because other nationals could have access to it but that is not to say that it cannot be used”.

Rev. Fayose suggested that: “It (Voter ID) can be used with verification from other sources”.

His comments tie in with those of former President John Agyekum Kufuor who has also called on the NIA to add the voter ID card to the list of base documents required for registration for the Ghana Card.

Even though registration has started, the Minority in parliament have boycotted the process claiming the exercise will disenfranchise and de-nationalise several Ghanaians because only birth certificates and passports will be used as identification for registration.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings, recently, also called on the NIA to “re-examine” the issues that have been raised concerning the exercise.

Rev. Dr. Fayose called for discussions on the matter, devoid of politics to “allow the administrators do their work” efficiently but stressed the need to use all means to identify Ghanaians for the registration exercise to assuage their fears.
