Internet café operators in Kumasi have bemoaned over the poor patronage of their services, a situation they have attributed to the emergence of smart phones which have the abilities of providing the same internet services.
They say, their services which are basically patronized by students for their academic research works, chats on social media, games among others, have been on the slow as most of the students now used their phones for those services, which is eventually collapsing their businesses.
Speaking in an interview with Otec News’ reporters Beatrice Frema and Sandra Osei, on Monday, July 9, 2018, some operators at in and around Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Adum, Bantama and Krofrom said the cost of internet bundle data for their services are high as compared to the cost involved in the use of smart phones.
An operator at Tech junction, near the KNUST, lamented that “before the emergence of smart phones in some years back, we were having packed desks here, but now a few people come here. We can’t even meet our utilities bills, all the money have to be used to settle our internet providers, which is expensive.”
“Now those who patronize our services are the students who come to check their BECE and WASSCE results, and with that too, there is little profit you get. Am afraid this internet café business will soon collapse for want of patronizers,” one operator Asafo, near the KsTU said.
