Kumasi: 3-man committee to probe “3 fires in 3 nights”

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has set up a three-member committee to investigate the central market and Asafo market fire outbreaks.

The committee is made up of DCFO Kwaku Manu Afful, Director of Operations GNFS; ACFO Joshua Nguah; Ashanti regional commander GNFS; and DOII Rashid Nisawu, Kumasi Metro Fire commander,

The committee chaired by DCFO Kwaku Manu Afful has been given seven days to present its report.

Chief Fire Officer of GNFS, Mr Edwin Ekow Blankson disclosed this to journalists when he visited the Kumasi central market and Asafo market fire scenes to assess the extent of damage on Tuesday, 23 April 2019.

While describing the Kumasi fire outbreaks as unprecedented, Mr Blankson said the service has recorded 17 fire outbreaks in four days with the major ones at the central market and the Asafo markets.

The affected traders have begun putting up temporal structures to continue their business but Mr Blankson said the move will temper with evidence to unravel the actual cause of the fires.

He indicated that firefighting is free and urged Ghanaians to report any fire service personnel who demand money to fight fire to the authorities of the GNFS.

Kumasi recorded three fire incidents on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night during the Easter festivities.
