Ghana Federation of Disability grateful to parliament

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD) has applauded the Ghana’s Parliament under the leadership of professor Aaron Mike Oquaye for employing the services of sign language interpreters to enhance the work of Parliament.

President of the federation, Yaw Ofori Debrah, says the move by the legislature will give opportunity to hearing impaired persons to understand the parliamentary proceedings.

“Ghanaians should rejoice because the 1992 constitution said no Ghanaian citizen should be denied of any information concerning the country and we are all aware that the hearing impaired people can only hear, understand or speak through signs so if the parliament has taken that move, they need to be commended” Mr. Ofori Debrah told otec news.

The Speaker of parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye has revealed that the legislature has employed the services of sign language interpreters to enhance the work of Parliament.

“We should be pleased to join sister parliaments in UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the employment of sign language as a medium of interpretation in parliament,” he said in a welcome address as parliament resumed from recess on Tuesday, 30th October 2018.

Mr. Ofori Debrah therefore appealed to other institutions, both public and private particularly television stations owners to employ sign language interpreters so that hearing impaired people will not be denied any information.
