Asantehemaa stops election of new Kumasi City Market leaders

Some traders at the Kejetia New Market have incur the wrath of the Asantehemaa following thier decision to hold elections at the facility without the notice of Manhyia Palace.

The trading group, “Kumasi City Market Traders Union”, which was allegedly formed by one Nana Franko to oppose the current leadership appointed by the Asantehemaa has been ordered to halt any elections in the facility with immediate effect.

The Asantehemaa’s Court presided over by the Queen of Asante Kingdom, Her Majesty Nana Yaa Konadu on Wednesday October 12, 2022, also directed the management of the Kumasi City Market Limited to remove all banners and advertising materials on the elections from the market.

The Kumasi City Market Traders Union had scheduled to hold its maiden elections to elect their leaders in October 2022 to lead the traders in the new Kejetia Market.

The formation of this new union was however opposed by some Queen Mothers who are representing the Asantehemaa at the market and so hauled the leadership of the new union to the Asantehemaa’s Court for amicable solution.

Speaking to OTEC News Kwame Agyenim Boateng, Head of all Queen Mothers representing Asantehemaa at the various markets in the Kumasi City, Nana Yaa Foriwaa said per the practices in market, no individual can elect leaders without the notice of Manhyia Palace.

“The market is for Asantehemaa and so she has appointed over 70 poeple at various departments to run the market for her, all leaders in the market were appointed by Manhyia Palace and so whoever wants to lead here will first have to get the blessings of the owner of the facility, which in this case is the Asantehemaa “

Chairman of the Eleven Member Steering Committee of the Kumasi Central Market Mr Kwabena Fosu who welcomed the decision, applauded Manhyia Palace for taking such firm decision.

He added that the over 70 appointees of the Asantehemaa were working smoothly and so see no reasons why anyone should form another group to oppose them.
