Blame Akufu Addo and ECOWAS leaders for coups in West Africa – Mr Paul Boateng

Chief Executive Officer for the African Center for Security, Mr Paul Boateng

The Chief Executive Officer for the African Center for Security, Mr Paul Boateng has blamed the President of the republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), for the recent coup d’état in the sub-region.

The renowned Security Expert has observed that, President Akufo-Addo during his reign as the Chairperson of ECOWAS together with other heads of member states failed to respond pragmatically to the insurgency of military takeovers in West Africa, making it contagious on the block.

Mr Paul Boateng was speaking to Captain Koda on the Kumasi based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo on Friday September 1, 2023 in reaction to the recent coup d’état at Gabon.

According to him, the West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS leader’s decision to soften their stands and allowed Mali’s Military Junta to join the bloc’s meeting on 2022 was a bad idea.

‘If you do critical analysis of the recent military interventions in West Africa, you will come to the realization that some decisions by ECOWAS contributed to all these unfortunate coups’

“When Colonel Asimmi Goïta seized power from  President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in the 2020 Malian coup d’état, we saw the Akuffo Addo chaired ECOWAS who shared numerous of photos of some ECOWAS leaders with the Malian  Military leader on social media after meeting him, and this is something I must say fueled other coups on the bloc”.

“With President Akuffo Addo’s background as a former Foreign Affairs Minister and his understanding of International Politics, , he ought to have known that, the ECOWAS had to engage the leadership of Mali’s coup  underground without coming to public with pictures which depict romance between the two groups.

The well-known Security Expert stated emphatically that, there could be more military takeovers if ECOWAS fail to sit up and proffer the right antidotes to the rampant coup d’état in the sub-region.
