A gynecologist and obstetrician specialist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Aisha Ali Issaka, has advised women to take proactive measures against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a major risk factor for cervical cancer.
HPV is a common viral infection that affects both men and women. While it can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, HPV is often spread through sexual contact.
Dr. Aisha Ali Issaka speaking on Otec FM’s morning show ‘Nyansapo’, hosted by Isaac Osei Akoto, on Tuesday, said certain strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer, making it essential for women to take preventive measures.
Her interview forms part of the International HPV Awareness Day on March 4, celebrated annually, which focuses on educating citizens about Human Papillomavirus and its related diseases.
Dr. Aisha Ali Issaka, who is also a member of the Ashanti Regional International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS) Ghana Chapter, recommended that “Women can protect themselves against HPV-related cervical cancer by getting vaccinated and conducting HPV DNA tests. The HPV vaccine is available for both boys and girls aged 9-15 years”.
In addition, she said women should undergo regular cervical cancer screening tests, such as Pap smears and HPV DNA tests, to detect any abnormal cell changes
Dr. Aisha Ali Issaka reminded women to prioritize their reproductive health by taking proactive measures against HPV, and noted that it can reduce their risk of cervical cancer and maintain overall well-being.
