Kumasi Kejetia Phase2 project: CONTRACTA lays off 150 due to stalled

About 150 workers on the stalled Kejetia Phase II Market Project in Kumasi have been laid off by construction firm CONTRACTA, sources close to the company have confirmed.

The affected staff, made up of engineers, technicians and labourers, represent nearly two-thirds of the total workforce on the project.

According to the sources, the decision follows months of inactivity at the project site.

Workers had remained home while still receiving monthly salaries despite construction works being halted.

Sources say an agreement existed between the Government of Ghana and CONTRACTA for government to subsidize part of the workers’ salaries during the downtime.

However, the agreement is yet to be honored, placing a heavy financial burden on the company.

The Kejetia Phase II Project, designed to complement the redeveloped Phase I market, has remained stalled for years.

The delay has raised concerns among traders, residents and workers about the future of the project and its impact on the Kumasi economy.

Some affected workers in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Tuesday May 26,2026 expressed frustration and appealed to government to release funds for work to resume.

“We are pleading with government to release the money for the project to continue so that we can return to work and earn something for our families,” one worker lamented.

Others warned that the layoffs will push many families into hardship, with unemployment likely to force some into desperate situations.
