Police detain man over attack on midwife at Tema Polyclinic

Police have arrested a suspect over the alleged assault on a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, after a viral video of the incident circulated on social media, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when the health worker was reportedly attacked by a relative of a patient while enforcing visiting hours at the facility.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Regional Health Directorate described the attack as unprovoked, stressing that the midwife was carrying out her official duties at the time.
The Directorate strongly condemned the assault and reaffirmed its support for the affected staff member and all healthcare workers across the region, insisting that they must be able to perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.

The Directorate further commended the Ghana Police Service for swiftly, restoring calm at the facility and effecting the arrest of the suspect involved. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Authorities reiterated that grievances at health facilities must be channelled through designated Client Service Desks rather than through confrontation, warning that violence against health workers will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in a statement has condemned the incident as “uncultured, unacceptable, and criminal act of violence against a healthcare professional whose only duty is to provide care and support to patients and their families.”
