93 arrested in major anti-drug sweep across Kumasi and Atwima Nwabiagya
The Ghana Police Service has arrested 93 suspects in a major intelligence-led operation targeting drug trafficking networks in Kumasi, its suburbs, and the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality.
The week-long operation, conducted by the Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team (SOT) between 15th and 24th July 2026, hit 14 locations including Afari, Nkawie, Atonsu Ahensan, Sawaba, Asokore Mampong, and “Thinker” at Alabar.
A press release om Monday, signed by the head of Ashanti Regional Public Affairs Unit of the GPS , Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo said the operation forms part of the Service’s commitment to “dismantle organized criminal networks, combat illicit drug trafficking, and restore public confidence in policing.”
He added: “These sustained intelligence-led operations will continue across the country as part of our efforts to maintain peace, enhance public safety, and protect our communities.”
Out of the 93 suspects, 58 are males and 35 are females.
Preliminary investigations show 65 are Ghanaians while 28 are Nigerians.
Key suspects arrested include Nurudeen Gafaru, 28, Abdul Gafaru, 29, Iddrisu Alhassan alias “Tagor”, 33, Akwasi Afriyie, 27, and Prince Chidera Okekelawe, 25, a Nigerian national. Police believe they are key figures in the region’s narcotics trade.
Police retrieved 40 compressed parcels of suspected narcotics, quantities of Tramadol, Ecstasy tablets, suspected cocaine, dried leaves believed to be narcotics, 30 locally manufactured toffees suspected to contain drugs, narcotic-infused beverages, and narcotics processing materials.
Other items include an unregistered motorcycle believed to be used for distribution, unregistered and expired pharmaceuticals such as Crestor, Zentel, and Cytotec.
Police also uncovered suspected commercial sexual exploitation activities at one of the locations.
Investigations are ongoing to establish links to human trafficking and immigration offences.
All suspects and exhibits are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that similar operations will be intensified nationwide.
