A/R: Police MTTD arrests 1,991 motorists over unauthorized use of sirens and bells
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 1,991 motorists over unauthorized use of sirens and bells.
The arrest exercise, which began in July 2026, was to ensure strict enforcement of Regulations 90 and 99 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).
Addressing the media at a press conference on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the Ashanti Regional MTTD Commander, Superintendent Kwame Boadi, said 97 out of the total number were apprehended for unauthorized use of sirens, while the rest were using bells.
He noted that one of the drivers has been convicted and is serving three months in jail.
He warned that any individual who flouts the directive will be dealt with.
“A person who contravenes this regulation commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than 25 penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than thirty days or both,” he said.
He noted that drivers and motorists are reminded to comply strictly with the provisions in the laws concerning the use of horns, sirens, lamps and strobe lights to avoid arrest.
