MFWA begins 5-day training for journalists from northern sector on media law and journalists’ rights
The Media Foundation for West Africa, MFWA, has begun a five-day workshop for 60 media practitioners selected from the northern sector of the country.
The workshop, which began on Monday, September 21, 2026, brought together media managers, reporters and editors to deepen their understanding of media law, journalists’ rights and available redress mechanisms.
Held in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, the training follows a successful one held for media practitioners in the southern sector.
Sessions covered practical topics including defamation and libel, access to information, court procedures, digital media risks and ethical considerations, as well as how to seek legal remedies and manage legal risk in day-to-day reporting.
One of the main facilitators, renowned journalist and legal practitioner, Sampson Lardi Anyenini, during his presentation urged participants to work diligently to ensure the rights of the people are protected.
“You must exercise your profession until corruption is eradicated and the abuse of power is also eradicated.”
” When all these things are achieved, the work is still there, we must continue the work. There will be people in government, there will be office holders, they must be held to account to the people who gave them the power,” he said.
He however called on journalists in the country, particularly the participants, to take advantage of such training and practice the outcomes in their newsrooms to ensure responsible journalism.
