Gov’t building 41 district model markets to decongest central business district – Minister

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has revealed that government is undertaking 41 District Model Markets to reduce congestion at the Kumasi Kejetia Market and other markets in the Central Business District.
“Some were asking the brain behind government’s decision to build these markets, but if you have realised, Kumasi is choked due to lack of good market facilities in these traditional communities in the region,” he said.

“The situation has forced most of our mothers to travel long hours to Kumasi just to trade,” he added.
He noted that the President, through the District Model Markets, aims at decentralizing trading activities.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene said this during his tour of the District Model Markets in the region.
As part of the tour, the Minister on Thursday, October 22, 2026, visited the model market site at Aboabo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.
The project at Aboabo, according to the Minister, was 20 percent complete.
He commended the contractor and the consultants for the good work done on the project.
The Minister had visited a similar project at Tebeso in the Bosome Freho District a day before the visit to the Aboabo project.
The Bosome Freho project is also over 40 percent complete, with the contractor aiming to complete the market in 2027.
Dr. Amoakohene said government is deliberate about providing a serene and conducive trading environment for traders in the region.
He called on Municipal and District Chief Executives to monitor the projects keenly to ensure proper execution.
