Mahama to engage Asantehene on escalating chieftaincy conflicts in Bawku and Walewale

President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Saturday, January 19 to address the escalating tensions in Bawku and Walewale.

The President made this announcement during his visit to the Nayiri Palace, where he engaged with the King and Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II.

Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Upper East and Northern regions, President Mahama highlighted the ongoing violence stemming from chieftaincy disputes between two ethnic factions, which have led to significant loss of life and property.

The President called for peace and underscored the importance of the Asantehene’s wisdom and leadership in resolving past conflicts.

He expressed hope that the upcoming engagement would help find a sustainable solution and foster lasting peace in the affected regions.

“Former President, Nana Addo gave a hint that the Otumfuo has been playing some role. I am supposed to meet with Otumfuo on January 19. So, when I go, it is one of the issues I will discuss with him. Whatever the outcome, I will inform you,” President Mahama told the Mamprugu Kingdom Overlord.
