In a touching act of generosity, prominent Ghanaian businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo has gifted a brand new Hyundai Elantra to Benjamin Asare, the goalkeeper for Accra Hearts of Oak and the Black Stars, after a video of the player using public transport went viral.

The video, which surfaced on social media s couple of weeks ago, showed Asare boarding a Trotro—Ghana’s popular local minibus transport—on his way to training. The footage sparked widespread admiration, with many praising the goalkeeper’s humility and dedication despite his status as a top-flight player.

Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony held on Wednesday, May 7, at the Hearts of Oak secretariat in Accra, Alhaji Agongo explained what inspired the gesture.

“When I saw a video of Accra Hearts of Oak and Black Stars goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, humbly commuting in a trotro, I was deeply moved by his resilience and commitment to Ghana. His journey from battling a career-threatening injury to becoming our number one goalkeeper is a powerful story of perseverance.”
Agongo added, “In recognition of his dedication, I presented him with a brand-new car, a small contribution to ease his journey, encourage him to keep striving for mother Ghana, and inspire him to continue evolving to his very best.”
The event was attended by club officials, media and Hearts of Oak head coach Abubakar Ouattara, who commended the gesture and urged Asare to remain focused.
“I’ll tell Asare to utilise the car well,” Ouattara said. “He should bear in mind it was as a result of his abilities on the pitch that earned him this prize.”
A visibly moved Asare expressed deep gratitude after receiving the keys to his new car.
“It is incredible for a lovely gesture to be extended to someone like me,” he said. “I’m thankful to Alhaji Agongo and everyone who continues to support local players.”
The story has since gained national attention, with many seeing it as a testament to the power of humility, hard work, and the importance of supporting homegrown talent.
