Ghanaians are one; Avoid tribal politics – Abu Jinapor urges NPP delegates

The Member of Parliament for Damongo constituency, Hon. John Abu Jinapor, has cautioned delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against tribal politics, urging them to place national unity and competence above ethnic considerations.
Addressing party delegates in the Bantama Constituency on Monday, Hon. Jinapor stressed that Ghana’s strength lies in its diversity and shared identity.
“Ghanaians, irrespective of where we come from, are one people with a common destiny,” he said, drawing applause from the gathering.
He highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Asantes and people from Northern Ghana.
Hon Abu Jinapor, who is a former minister for Lands and Natural Resources, noted that the relationship has been built on unity, cooperation, and mutual respect over generations.
According to him, attempts to divide the country along ethnic lines undermine this shared heritage.
Hon. Jinapor urged delegates to resist campaigns rooted in tribal sentiment, arguing that such approaches distract from the real issues facing the party and the nation.
“Leadership should be about competence, vision, and the ability to unite people, not where one comes from,” he stated.
He further observed that individuals who campaign on tribal grounds often demonstrate a poor understanding of Ghana’s history, pointing out that relations between the Northern and Southern parts of the country have traditionally been cordial and harmonious.
“Our political choices must reflect that history of togetherness,” he added.
In his appeal to delegates, Hon. Jinapor called for an emphatic endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, assuring the Bantama delegates that the Savannah Region, his home region, remains fully committed to offering similar overwhelming support.
“Unity within the party will translate into victory for the nation,” he said.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will on Saturday, January 31, 2026, will elect it’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
The contenders include former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, and Ing Kwabena Agyei Adjapong.
The others are Dr Bryan Acheampong and Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
