Police details emerge on how 16 died at Potrikrom ambulance-ford collision

The Ghana Police Service has given full details of the Potrikrom accident which claimed 16 lives.
The 16 victims were confirmed dead in the gory accident on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Given accounts of the accident, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service at Mankranso said the accident occurred following a head-on-collision between an Ambulance and a Ford Transit vehicle.
Cause of Accident
The Mankranso MTTD Commander, Superintendent Andrews Kosi Okoningye, revealed the ambulance had a one-month, three-week-old baby onboard when the accident occurred.
According to him, the Ambulance with Registration number GV 527-23 was overtaking a trailer when it clashed with the Ford Transit with Registration number GT 6576-19 head-on.
14 Die On Spot, 2 in Hospital
He noted the impact of the accident saw 14 individuals dying on the spot with an additional two dying upon arrival at the hospital.
Survivors
Superintendent Okoningye revealed only two passengers in the Ford Transit survived the gory accident.
He noted the Ambulance driver, the baby on board the ambulance, a nurse, and mother of the child also survived the accident and are currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Accident’s Impact
The MTTD Commander further noted that the accident was so strong the Ford Transit was destroyed entirely in the accident.
He added the engine and seats in the Ford Transit were forced out of the car due to the impact of the accident.
Identification of Victims
Superintendent Okoningye said police have begun processes to identify the 16 victims.
He added the police have already contacted transport unions at Drobo, and Police to identify and hand over the bodies to families.
